Raney Geotechnical Inc. is a geotechnical engineering, and construction materials testing and inspection firm with offices and laboratory testing facilities located in West Sacramento, California. The firm was founded in 1979 by John Raney and incorporated in 2000 with John Raney as president. Geotechnical engineering services are performed for clients in government, housing, commercial building, and water resources. Construction testing is performed for a variety of projects within the greater Sacramento area (generally within 100 miles of our office) including: large acreage mass grading, retail, industrial, public works, schools, distribution centers, and high-rise buildings.
The firm currently has 16 employees, five of whom are graduates of engineering/geology programs. Staff includes three registered professionals in civil and geotechnical engineering. Professional association memberships include: ACI, ACIL, ASCE, ASFE, ASNT, AWS, BIASC, CCTIA, ICC, SEAOC, and SSA.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
Our Geotechnical Engineering staff has combined experience in excess of 90 years related to geotechnical engineering. We perform geotechnical studies for a wide variety of public and private improvements including: high-rise buildings, low-rise commercial buildings, schools, residential subdivisions, shopping centers, bridges, hospitals, roadways, pipelines, storm water basins, levees, and embankment dams for both water and tailings impoundment. Our engineers have extensive experience in evaluating cost-effective earthwork, soil chemical treatment, foundation design, earth retaining, and pavement design alternatives. Our geotechnical investigations use a variety of site exploratory techniques including exploratory drilling, dynamic cone penetration testing, test excavations, cone penetration testing, and geophysical methods (seismic refraction surveys).
CONSTRUCTION OBSERVATION AND MATERIALS
TESTING
Since
1987 our firm has been providing a wide range of construction inspection and
materials testing services, in addition to earthwork. We are qualified and certified for testing
and inspection related to: piling/drilled piers; earthwork/foundation field
density testing, and microcracking; reinforced concrete (cast in place,
pre-cast, reinforcing steel/pre-stressed/post-tensioned); pneumatically placed
concrete (gunite); structural steel welding/high
strength bolting; structural masonry; insulating concrete; anchor load testing;
and, spray applied fireproofing. All inspections and tess
are performed by trained and qualified inspectors and technicians under the
supervision of a professional engineer in compliance with industry standards,
including California Council of Testing and Inspection Agencies (CCTIA)
guidelines, California Building Code (CBC), California Department of
Transportation (Caltrans), and ASTM D3740 and E329. Our field technicians
maintain certifications by ACI and ICC for construction observation and
testing. Each of our field technicians is in frequent phone contact with our
office in
LABORATORY SERVICES
Raney Geotechnical Inc. operates a full testing laboratory facility at our West Sacramento office to supplement our consulting and construction testing services. We maintain calibrated equipment and testing apparatus to perform a variety of strength and index property tests on soil and aggregate samples for engineering evaluation. In addition, we perform testing on construction materials for specification conformance consideration. We maintain a large moisture cure room with controlled and monitored humidity and temperature conditions for the curing of concrete and masonry samples. Our laboratory is inspected on a regular basis by the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
